“The Envirothon is an environmental and natural resources conservation problem-solving, leadership experience and academic competition for secondary school (high school) students (grades 9-12 or ages 14-19) across the United States, Canada, China, and Singapore. Incorporating STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math) principles, hands-on learning, and outdoor field experiences, the Envirothon fosters student learning in the areas of AQUATIC ECOLOGY, FORESTRY, SOILS and LAND USE, WILDLIFE, and CURRENT ENVIRONMENTAL ISSUES.
Students are challenged to develop critical thinking skills to create innovative solutions to the complex local and global environmental and natural resource issues facing our world today. With Envirothon, students are equipped with the knowledge and skills to educate others, inspire action in their local communities, and promote a lifelong commitment to environmental stewardship and sustainability.”

April, 2026 NM Envirothon Special Topic: Non-Point Source Pollution
2026 Venue: Las Vegas, NM
“The New Mexico Envirothon is hosted in a different part of New Mexico each year. By moving competition sites each year, we are able to expose students to diverse environmental issues, ecosystems, and topography. Planning for each year’s competition begins long before the actual event is scheduled to take place. While details are limited as plans are being made, you can look ahead to the NCF Competition to learn the special topic designation and where Nationals will be held following the State Competition.”

At the New Mexico Envirothon, teams of 5 students must prepare for a two-day indoor/outdoor state competition held every April. Teams work together to answer questions at field stations and develop solutions to environmental problems presented to them by people working in agencies and organizations involved in natural resource management. There are awards for each area of study.
The team that wins first place overall will represent New Mexico at the National Envirothon Competition hosted at a different state or Canadian location each year. The goal of the New Mexico Envirothon is to develop knowledgeable, skilled and dedicated citizens who are willing to work toward achieving and maintaining a balance between the quality of life and the quality of the environment.
